Classroom News for the Week of October 27th


News and Upcoming Events: 



* Wednesday night HW link:     Inuit Bears


  • Scroll through the statues of dancing bears. Choose three of your favorites and sketch them. Include as much detail as you can. Look carefully. Pay close attention to the bears' poses and try to get the sense of movement of the bears dancing.

10/31 Halloween Parade 1:30 p.m.
Students should bring their costumes to school in bags with their names clearly marked on them. They will change after lunch. Fake weapons are not allowed at school.

Classroom News for the Week of October 20th

News and Upcoming Events: 

* The students did an excellent job on their CA. posters! Students' work will be on display in the rotunda beginning later this week. Please make sure to visit!

* For the next two Tuesdays, students will be making paper mache masks for our upcoming play. I have disposable aprons for the children to wear during this process, but you are welcome to send a smock from home. Please, no fancy clothes on these days.

Language Arts:

This week students will be taking LAUSD's Quarter 1 Language Arts assessment. Students will be reading articles related to archeology, answering comprehension questions, and write a fictional narrative. Throughout the unit, students will discuss their thinking in classroom and small group discussions and will take notes.

10/9 Picture Day

This Friday 10/10 - Field Trip to Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens
Special Instructions-
All students will need to bring a lunch from home. You are encouraged to use reusable lunch boxes to minimize waste. 
Students should also have a water bottle and a small snack separate from their lunches. If traffic is bad, we might not have time for a snack as our tour starts promptly at 9:30 a.m. so please make sure your child has had a filling and nutritious breakfast. Be sure to wear your new field trip t-shirt (coming home early this week)!

Math: 

This week we will be reviewing all of the skills from quarter 1 in preparation for next week's unit 1 assessment.

Multiplication Madness (Fact Practice) 

Reading: 

Genre Genius: The students are making strong progress on reading books from different genres. Be sure to ask your child about his or her progress. We are about half way through the marking period.

This week we will be reading realistic fiction, My Diary From Here to There. We will be making inferences to understand character and making double bubble maps to compare and contrast characters from different stories.

Writer's Workshop: Unit 1 Personal Narratives

Students have begun drafting a story to take through the writing process and publish into a book. Our mini-lessons will focus on punctuating dialogue and creating captivating titles.

Greek and Latin Roots:


There will be no words to study this week to allow students extra time to work on the social studies project.
