Classroom News for the Week of March 3rd


Upcoming:

* February reading calendars are due Monday, March 3.

* Typed tall tale stories due Friday, March 7th. If you are finished early, please turn them in early. I will try to get it back to you with my notes quickly, so that you can start working toward due date #2. Scroll down for complete instructions. 

* Report Card #2 will be sent home Friday, March 7.

* Field trip to the Southwest Museum - March 21. We will be panning for gold and visiting the assayer's office! Trip slips will be sent home on Monday. Please return as soon as possible.

What's Going On This Week In Class:


Math: 

Geometry continued: Circles & Measuring Angles Using a Protractor. A quiz on Thursday will cover geometric terms (students should have tree maps/notes with words and definitions and examples in their homework folders). Please study these important mathematical terms.

Review of Decimals and Order of Operations

Level 6 of Multiplication Madness has been added! Ask your child about his/her progress.

Writing:

We will be brainstorming, drafting, and peer revising the "About the Author" and "Dedication" portions of the book.

Spelling Rules: More Practice With Plurals

Reading:

Practicing Answering Inference and Main Idea/Detail Questions 

Close reading of informational text (Scholastic News). Our focus will be on an article on 3D printing: "I Printed My Robot Hand".

We will also begin reading the (Newbery Award Winning) gold rush adventure, By the Great Horn Spoon, By Sid Fleischman.

Health:

Consumer Awareness continued: Analyzing Advertising and Making Healthful Choices

Visual Arts:

Identifying Graphics/Lettering That Make An Eye-Catching Book Cover; Designing a Book Cover for the Tall Tale Books

Social Studies/Science:

Social Studies: The Rancho Era in California

Physical Science: Electricity and Magnetism continued...

Typing your book project:

FORMAT:
Please type your book as a Word document.
Font size: 14
Font type: Your choice, but it must be VERY legible.
Spacing between lines: 1.5
Margins: Left, bottom, and top margins 1.5 inches; Right margin 1.0 inch

The title should be on your first page. Please center it.

You may use chapter or section headings. Remember to capitalize every first letter in your title and chapter headings.

Indent your paragraphs.

There is no page limit.  Do not put page numbers on your pages.

Do not type your name on any of the pages. When you turn the hard copies in (see below), please write your name in pencil on the top left hand corner.

DUE DATES:
DUE DATE # 1 -Please bring in a typed copy (hard copy) of your story by Friday, March 7th.  You may turn it in earlier (and that is appreciated!). You will receive this copy back with my notes no later than Monday, March 10th.  You do not need to bring the flashdrive.

DUE DATE #2 - On Thursday, March  13th your final copy (hard copy) and the copy on the flashdrive is due. We will be printing off of your flashdrive on to the publishers’ special paper at school on Thursday 3/13 and Friday 3/14.

After spring break we will begin illustrating the book.
