Classroom News for the Week of December 14th

News and Upcoming Events:
  • Reminder- Bring your instruments every Monday.
  • 12/14 Holiday Program - 1pm is the time for families of 3rd through 6th grade students. Students: Don't forget to dress up:)!
  • 12/18 Grade 4 Sundae Party 1:15pm. Thank you to everyone who signed up to volunteer and/or donate items! We really appreciate your time and help!
  • 12/21-1/8 Winter Break
  • Jan 14. California Mission Project due. On Monday, students will be receiving a rubric to help guide them in finishing their projects. You will also be able to find the rubric in "Class Handouts" after Wednesday 12/16.
Supplies needed: We will be doing some collage work when we return from break. Please save magazines, wrapping paper scraps, and old calendars for our class. Please drop off donated supplies to room 12 Monday, January 11th.

Math:
Math- Division word problems with area models; Finding factor Pairs

Accelerated Math (self-paced practice)

Multiplication Madness (Fact Practice) 

Reading:


Reading and Analyzing Paired Texts: Students will read a fictional story and a nonfiction article on the same topic. They will discuss and answer comprehension questions and compare and contrast the two sources; Scholastic News

Identifying Fact, Opinion, and Bias in Historical Documents continued..

 "Genre Genius" for the 2nd reporting period.


Spelling & Vocabulary:

There will be no spelling/ vocabulary words this week.
Writing:

Students will begin typing their persuasive essays in the computer lab - creating subheadings, inserting relevant graphics, and creating text boxes.

Second Step/Health:

Joining In: There will be a short family exercise on Thursday night to complete this lesson. Please help your child complete it, and sign off on the sheet.

Arts:

Designing and painting tiles; Holiday Concert performing

Classroom News for the Week of November 30

News and Upcoming Events:

  • 12/3 Scoring for Interim Assessments; Ms. Patterson will be teaching 
  • Field Trip: Our class will visit JPL on January 28th.  JPL requires we submit names and citizenship status of all adults attending 6 weeks in advance. Our class can bring 4 parent chaperones. If you would like to attend (8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.), please email me that you are able to chaperone and your citizenship status (US Citizen, Resident Green Card, etc.) Chaperones will be assigned on a first come/first serve basis.

  • Thank you to all the students for working so hard and with such diligence on their ELA Assessments last week!
  • 11/17 Social Studies Home Project Assigned. Please talk with your child about the assignment and return the Parent/Student tear-off by Wednesday. The assignment will also be posted under the Class Handout Tab on this blog.
  • 11/16 - 11/20 Report Card Conferences (M, W, TH, & F Early Dismissal at 12:50. Tuesday Dismissal is at 1:30) Our conference schedule is very tight. Please be on time. Conferences are limited to 15 minutes each.
  • 11/19 Make-up Picture Day. Order forms are available in the office.
  • 11/23- 11/27 Thanksgiving Break

This week students will be using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve multi-step word problems.

Reading:

Due to technical difficulties, last week's interim assessment was moved to this week. Students will be taking English Language Arts Interim Assessment #1 Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. This assessment covers reading comprehension, response to literature, and narrative writing. 

This week students will be finishing Island of the Blue Dolphins.
They will take the AR quiz on Friday and start working on final, beyond the book projects.

Math:
This week we will use the standard algorithm to multiply 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers x 1 digit numbers in the context of word problems. Students will also be learning to connect area models and the distributive property.

Reading:

Students will be taking English Language Arts Interim Assessment #1 this week. This assessment covers reading comprehension and
