Classroom News for the Week of January 26

News and Upcoming Events: 

1/29 - Book Orders Due

Reminders:
* Tardies - Please make sure your child is at school and in line by the 8:06 bell. We try to start the school day at 8:11 promptly. Thank you for your help!

* Please check your child's Homework Log nightly and sign or initial after the work has been completed. Remind your child that completed homework and the HW log are due in class daily.

Second Step:

Lesson Focus: Showing Compassion. The Second Step Home Assignment is due Friday.

Math: 

Fractions on a Number Line; Adding and Subtracting Like Fractions

Reading:

Bud, Not Buddy - This week we will be looking at Author's Tools and Techniques: Foreshadowing, Flashback, Showing not Telling, Use of Vernacular Language; Figurative Language.

Evaluating Primary Sources


Writing:
Assessment: Students will be taking the District's Writing Assessment this week. Last week they read articles, took notes, watched a video, engaged in small group discussion. This week they will use the information the learned to write an informative article.

Mission Project: Students are working in pairs to research and write about a California mission. Students are using websites and several text sources to gather information and take notes. Students will be typing their report in the computer lab. They will also be drawing a simple line drawing of their mission. This project is being completed at school. Due date is 2/13.

Letters: Students will be writing thank you letters to the wonderful docents at the Leonis Adobe Museum.

Social Studies/Science:

In conjunction with Bud, Not Buddy, we will learn about "Hoovervilles" in the depression era. Students will also see portions of the PBS documentary "Riding the Rails".

Classroom News for the Week of January 19th



News and Upcoming Events: 

1/19 MLK Holiday School Closed

1/21 & 1/22 Showing of "Akeelah and the Bee" - Please turn in your child's permission slip right away.

1/23 Field Trip To Leonis Adobe Museum. 
On this trip, students will learn what life was like on a working rancho during the early 1800s. Students will need to bring a sack lunch and a snack on this day. The museum limits us to 3 parent chaperones on this trip. Due to limited space on the bus, parents will need to drive/carpool. If you would like to attend, please email me at slc5001@lausd.net. Chaperones will be assigned on a first come/first serve basis.

Reading:

This week we will begin reading Bud, Not Buddy. This Newbery- Award winning book by Christopher Paul Curtis, follows the adventures of a young boy in the Depression era as he searches for his father. Throughout the unit we will be using Kaplan's Depth and Complexity Icons to dig deeper into the text. We will also be discussing the book's theme(s).
