Classroom News for the Week of November 2nd

What's Going On This Week In Class:

Math:
This week we will use the standard algorithm to multiply 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers x 1 digit numbers in the context of word problems. Students will also be learning to connect area models and the distributive property.

Reading:

Students will be taking English Language Arts Interim Assessment #1 this week. This assessment covers reading comprehension and 

Island of the Blue Dolphins, chapters 19-24. 

Last Week! Genre Blackout:  Students have been challenged to read books from 9 different genres in the first reporting period. Ask your child about his/her progress.

Classroom News for the Week of October 26th

What's Going On This Week In Class:

Math:
This week we will model multiplication problems (2,3,4 digit numbers x 1 digit numbers) on a place value chart. On Wednesday the students will review the standard algorithm for multiplication.

This week we will also start Accelerated Math (self-paced practice).

Multiplication Madness (Fact Practice) 

Reading:

Non-fiction text structures: sequence, problem and solution, cause and effect, description, and comparison. This week we will focus on cause and effect. Students will read several different non-fiction texts and will use graphic organizers to show how the author structured his/her writing.

Island of the Blue Dolphins, chapters 14-18. 

Genre Blackout:  Students have been challenged to read books from 9 different genres in the first reporting period. We are halfway there! Ask your child about his/her progress.


Spelling & Vocabulary:

No Spelling and vocabulary this week.

Tip: Spend 10 minutes verbally studying the words each day. Research suggests that studying for small periods regularly is more effective than cramming. In addition to having your child spell the word aloud, ask your child to use the word in an imaginative sentence. You can pick a "theme" for the sentences, such as Halloween or the Desert…"Give me a sentence with 'collide' that has to do with Halloween." This can provide some challenge and novelty to a routine task.

Writing:
This week we begin a new writing unit. Student will be learning how to write persuasive and personal essays. This week's lessons include collecting ideas as an essayist and writing to learn.

Social Studies/Science:

No social studies/ science rotation this week.
