Classroom News for the Week of May 1st

News and Upcoming Events: 
  • Orchestra is Monday. Remember to bring your instruments.
  • 5/2-5/5 and 5/8-5/9 Standardized Test (SBAC) dates for Grade 4. We will be testing each morning (Tues., Wed., Thurs. - Language Arts; Fri. and Mon. 5/8 -Math; Tues. 5/9- Make-up tests.) Please make sure your child is at school on time, has a had a restful night and a nutritious breakfast. Thank you!
  • 5/5 Typed Speech due for Living History Museum (LHM)/Famous Californian Project: For detailed instructions and due dates see LHM.pdf in the "Class Handouts" link on the right side of this page.
  • The Ramayana perfomance date will be announced this week. I will be sending out a separate email mid-week. Thank you  for your patience and understanding. We have had some delays due to lack of rehearsal space. The MPR is currently being used as a classroom while carpeting in the main building classrooms gets removed and new tile is installed.
  •  5/19 8:30-10a.m. for the "Living History Museum" in the MPR.

Classroom News for the Week of April 24th

News and Upcoming Events: 
  • Orchestra is Monday. Remember to bring your instruments.
  • Wed 4/26 Field trip to Gene Autry Museum. We will have a docent tour of the museum, classroom lesson on the gold rush, and students will get a chance to pan for gold. Please wear your trip T-shirt and bring a snack and lunch from home.
  • 4/28 Field trip to Leonis Adobe Museum. (This trip was initially scheduled in January but cancelled due to rain - this is our rescheduled date.) This trip is a hands-on tour where student learn about life in the Rancho Era. Please wear your trip T-shirt and bring a snack and lunch from home.
  • Save the date: May 19th 8:30-10 for the "Living History Museum"
  • 5/2-5/5 and 5/8-5/9 Spring Standardized Test (SBAC) dates for Grade 4
  • Living History Museum (LHM) Project: On Monday and Wednesday this week, students will have a short research assignment for the Famous Californian/Living History Museum project. Looking ahead- On Friday 4/28 your child will bring home detailed instructions for writing a one minute first person speech for the project. Speeches will be due on 5/5. No other Language Arts HW will be assigned next week.

Classroom News for the Week of April 17

News and Upcoming Events:

  • 4/17 School resumes. Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful spring break!
  • 4/26 Field trip to Gene Autry Museum. I can take 3 parent chaperones. Please email me at slc5001@lausd.net if you would like to attend. We will have a docent tour of the museum, classroom lesson on the gold rush, and students will get a chance to pan for gold.

In celebration of Earth Day, we will be reading The Lorax and discussing the book's metaphors and themes; Biography of John Muir; Learning to recognize Fake News

What influenced John Muir? What effects did his conservation efforts have?; Initial research into "Famous Californian" project.

Classroom News for the Week of April 3rd

  • Any other interesting junk you have lying around - it's welcome :)

What's Going On This Week In Class:

Math: 
Comparing and Ordering Fractions; Adding and subtracting like fractions

Reading:

This week we will read Chps. 16-18 of By The Great Horn Spoon. Related lessons: Answering comprehension questions in complete sentences. Students will take the AR quiz of the book this Thursday and Friday.

Writing:

Writing historical fiction (Letters home from the gold fields of California)

Arts:
Drama:  Ramayana rehearsal - Using a rubric to guide us (Focus, Enthusiasm, Gesture, and Content).
