Supplies: Thank you, Everyone, for the classroom supplies! We have reached capacity for what I can store in the classroom. I will likely send another call out for paper towels, post-its, tissues, etc. in a few months. Donations for copy paper are still needed.

Volunteer Opportunity #1: Mrs. Paz and I are looking for a regular volunteer who can come in anytime on Thursdays or Fridays and make copies for the following week(s). We can train you to use the copy and duplo machines. We estimate this to be a one to two hour commitment each week. If you are interested, please email me at slc5001@lausd.net. Thank you!

Volunteer Opportunity #2: I am looking for someone who can prep social studies materials for the 4th grade. This involves tearing out perforated assignments from the SS book and stapling them. This can be done at home and then returned to school at a later date. If you are interested, please email me at slc5001@lausd.net. Thank you!

What's Going On This Week In Class:

Responsive Classroom: This week we will continue reviewing Rm. 12's class procedures and routines. Through Morning Meetings, Closing Circles, and other activities we will continue to get to know one another better. My goal is to build a classroom environment where students feel safe to take risks, have a sense of belonging to our community, and are academically challenged.

Math:
Place value through the millions period continued: Rounding numbers; Adding and subtracting large numbers.

Fluency with Math Facts

Reading:
Chapters 4-7 of Katherine Peterson's Newbery-award winning book,  Bridge to Terabithia (realistic fiction). Our focus will be on drawing conclusions and making inferences about characters based on their thoughts and actions and identifying plot conflicts; Review of QAR strategies.

Genre Blackout: Students are challenged to read books from 9 different genres in the first reporting period. Ask your child about his or her progress.

Writing:

This week students will publish personal narratives about a happy memory. This writing piece will serve as baseline assessment. From it, we will establish writing goals for the upcoming narrative writing unit.

P.E.:
P.E. collaborative project: the Never-Before-Seen (NBS) Dance

Social Studies/ Science:
Our first rotations begin next week.

Arts:
Drama with Ms. Beret on Wednesday- Review of pantomime and improvisation.

Visual Arts- Students will be introduced to the Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS). This is a way to look, think, and critically discuss media.

Reminders:

Tardies:
Please make sure your child is at school and in line by the 8:06 bell. We try to start the school day at 8:11 promptly. Thank you for your help!

Please check your child's Homework Log nightly and sign or initial after the work has been completed. Remind your child that completed homework and the HW log are due in class daily.
