Classroom News for the Week of August 24th

What's Going On This Week In Class:


Math: 
Place Value Through the Millions Period; Rounding

Multiplication Madness (Fact Practice) 

Reading:

This week we will begin reading Katherine Peterson's Newbery-award winning book,  Bridge to Terabithia (realistic fiction). Our focus will be on drawing conclusions and making inferences about characters based on their thoughts and actions. Students will also be using Depth and Complexity icons to dig deeper into the text.

Genre Blackout: Students will be challenged to read books from 9 different genres in the first reporting period. 

Writing:

This week we begin Unit 1 of Writer's Workshop: Realistic Fiction. Our focus will be on using moments from real life to gather ideas for fictional stories.


Students will continue to write the narrative stories about how they were named.


PE:

Students will work in pairs to create an "Never-Before-Seen (NBS) Dance". Students will work with a criteria chart over the next two weeks to develop an original 2 minute dance to perform for their classmates.

Social Studies/Science:

Rotations begin Friday, September 11.

Arts:

Visual Arts: Symmetry in Art - Creating Name Mandalas

Classroom News for the week of August 17th

What's Going On This Week In Class:

Class-building:
This week we will learn and practice the routines and procedures of room 12. In addition, we will work together to develop academic and social expectations for our class. We will also attend a school-wide behavior assembly this Thursday. 

We will participate in many fun language arts activities to help us all get to know one another even better. These activities will help us practice both listening and writing skills. 

Students will also take beginning of the year baseline assessments in reading, writing, and math.

Homework:

Your child will have short homework tasks to complete each evening this week. Please check your child's homework log every night and sign it when the work is completed. Help remind your child that his or her homework log must be at school every day. It's a good idea for students to keep it inside their homework folders.

Classroom News for the Week of June 4th

News and Upcoming Events: 

Thank you for coming to the Voices Within Culmination last Friday. The students put so much effort into the songs and the program. I am so proud of them!

All Week - School is dismissed at 12:50.
If your child is staying on the yard, please send him or her with extra food for the long afternoon. Lunch is not served from the cafeteria. Students may purchase brunch during recess 10-10:30.

6/4 Last Day of School; Report Cards Sent Home & 4th Grade End-of-Year Party 11:45 a.m.
Please send your $5 donation no later than Tuesday. The money  will go towards pizza, drinks, vegetable trays, and other treats.

Items Needed:

Newspaper! We need LOTS of newspaper for an upcoming project. Please feel free to drop off anytime before Wednesday.


What's Going On This Week In Class:

This week we will finish the Geometry Map Project, NBS Skits, and the Build It! Dowel Challenge. This will be a fun week filled with hands-on projects to end our year.

Classroom News for the Week of May 25th

News and Upcoming Events: 

Thank you all for attending Open House! It was wonderful to see so many families in attendance!


5/25 Monday - Memorial Day Holiday - School Closed

5/27 Wednesday - Last Night of Homework

5/28 Thursday - Field Trip to Natural History Museum 
We have all the parent chaperones we need. Thank you! Students should bring a snack and a sack lunch. Students should wear shoes comfortable for walking.

5/29 Friday -"Voices Within"Performance

Important! Students need to be at school at 8 a.m. We need the extra time to warm-up and rehearse with the Master Chorale singers. 

Clothing: Students should wear plain, solid-color T-shirts. They will be given a white Voices Within shirt the morning of the performance and we don't want any logos or detailing showing through. Students should wear black jeans or pants. If this isn't an option, they should wear the darkest pants they have. No hats.

Our performance (one time only!) is going to be on May 29th at 9 AM in the MPR. Don't miss it!

6/4 Last Day of School; 4th Grade End-of-Year Party

Items Needed:

Newspaper! We need LOTS of newspaper for an upcoming project. Please feel free to drop off anytime this week.

Classroom clean-out is this Friday afternoon. Students will be bringing home all of their projects/ work/belongings. Please have your child bring a sturdy, large, two- handled bag to transport his/her belongings home. A double bagged Trader Joe's shopping bag or other reusable grocery bag works well.

Classroom News For the Week of May 18th

News and Upcoming Events: 

5/18 Spring Concert 1 pm in the MPR
Orchestra students should wear black pants or skirts/ white shirts.

5/19 & 5/20 Book Fair 
Rm. 17 students will be visiting the book fair. Students wishing to purchase items should bring money to school. Students are responsible for the handling and safekeeping of their money.

5/21 Early Dismissal (12:50 p.m.) and Open House 6 - 7 p.m.
Please come to room 17 and see many of the projects and assignments your child has been working on!

  • Students may turn in a maximum of two sports related articles

Students will receive a trip slip on Monday. Please sign and complete as soon as possible. We can take 6 chaperones on this trip. Please email me at slc5001@lausd.net if you would like to come. This is a fun and informative trip to culminate the year. Student groups will tour the museum at their own pace.
