Classroom News for the Week of February 12th

News and Upcoming Events:

2/12 -Trip Slips for JPL and Permission Slips to watch "Hidden Figures" were sent home last week. Please return these forms by Monday.

Homework this week - No language arts homework will be assigned this week. For social studies homework, please watch some of the Winter Olympics each evening. Think about and reflect on what you are seeing and hearing on these topics- geography, politics, athleticism, determination, time, speed, judging, language, (all of it). Be ready to share your thoughts at Morning Meeting.

2/14 Valentines' Day -  We will celebrate at the end of the day. If your child brings valentines, please make sure there are enough for every student. We have 30 students in class. Small candies attached to valentines are fine, but please do not send any additional treats such as cookies, cupcakes, donuts etc.  Any of these items will be left in the office for you to pick up. Thank you for your understanding.

2/15 Field Trip to JPL. We will be back on campus for lunch, but may be past cafeteria serving-time, so all students should bring a lunch and snack from home. Reusable lunch boxes are fine. Wear your field trip t-shirt and shoes comfortable for walking.

2/19 President's Day - School Closed.

2/16 - Your child will be bringing home a draft of his/her story to type at home. Complete instructions will be sent home on Friday, Feb 16. Typed drafts are due Monday, February 26th. This is a good time to make sure your printer is working and that you have printer ink. Additionally, the project works best if typed using Microsoft Word.

Essay Contest - All students are encouraged to enter Scholastic's 2018 Breaking Barriers Essay Contest. Students will be writing at home, but participants will meet each Tuesday to discuss the essay and give one another feedback. Interested students took home a flyer last week. Homework:
Please check your child's Homework Log nightly and sign or initial after the work has been completed. Remind your child that completed homework and the HW log are due in class daily.

Birthday Celebrations: If you would like to send treats to celebrate your child's birthday, please email me a day or 2 in advance so that I can make time in our schedule for it. Treats must be something small and easy to pass out. Donuts, cookies, muffins, and mini cupcakes all work great. We currently have 30 students in our class. Your child will distribute them at the end of the day as his/her classmates are leaving the room.

Donations: If you would like to make a donation to our class (this allows me to turn in receipts for purchases I have made for the students), you can write a check to "Mt. Washington El." In the subject line write, "Donation to Room 12". Any amount is appreciated! Thank you!
