Classroom News for the Week of October 7th

News and Upcoming Events: 
  • Orchestra is on Monday. Remember your instrument.
  • Picture Day is Thursday 10/10. Order forms have been sent home. Please return your envelope a.s.a.p. if you are planning to buy pictures.
  • 10/9 Unassigned Day- School closed
  • 10/17 Field trip to Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden. All chaperone spots have been filled. Thank you!
  • 11/11 Veterans' Day - No school.
  • 11/21 Save the Date: This is the tentative date for the social studies PBL presentations 8:45 - 9:30. All parents are invited!

What's Going On This Week In Class:

Math: 
It's metric week! We will be reviewing metric measurement (length, mass, and capacity). Students will be converting units and solving multiple step addition/subtraction word problems with metric measurement.

Khan Academy (Individualized practice)

Reading:
This week students will read chapters 7- 11 of Scott O'Dell's Newbery-Award winning book, Island of the Blue Dolphins. This work of historical fiction ties in with our current social studies unit on the geography and native people of California. We will be using Depth and Complexity icons to help us dig deeper into the text.

Genre Blackout: Students are challenged to read books from 9 different genres in the first reporting period. Ask your child about his or her progress.

Social Studies: Students will begin research for their first PBL project: What Makes Our State Special?. This group project will be completed in class over the upcoming weeks. Check the blog regularly for presentation dates (likely in mid/late November).
