Classroom News for the Week of March 7th

News and Upcoming Events:
  • Student authored Book Project -  Typed stories are due on Tues. March 8 (not Mar. 4 as previously stated) although students are encouraged to bring in their hard copies as early as possible. Now is a good time to make sure your printer has ink, is working, etc.All students who need one will be given a flash drive (green wrist band). If your child loses the flash drive, it is $5 to replace. Students will receive their typed drafts back (with my notes) no later than 3/11 so they can make final revisions.
  • Wolf Pack Run- Thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success for our class and school! We are so grateful for your contributions and support!
  • Good Luck to All Fairy Tale Contest Entrants - Your stories have been sent to New York. Winners are announced 4/19.
  • Intervention Classes - Class begins the Wednesday 3/9 at 2:40 for selected students.
  • 3/11 Report Card #2 will be sent home
  • 4/1 Field Trip To Autry Museum - Gold Rush. Students will be bringing home a trip slip this week. Please make sure to sign it and return it a.s.a.p. We can take 2 chaperones on this trip. Please be prepared to ride the bus with the students and help supervise. Our trip is from 11 am until 2:30. Please email me if you would like to attend (slc5001@lausd.net). Chaperones will be assigned on a first-come/first-serve basis.

Math:
Math- Fractions - Adding and Subtracting Fractions

Accelerated Math (Self-paced practice)

Multiplication Madness (Fact Practice) 

Reading:

This week we will begin reading the novel By The Great Horn Spoon (an adventure tale in the Gold Rush). This book by Sid Fleischmann won the Newbery Award in Children's Literature. Be sure to ask your child about the story. Have your child give you a quick oral summary of the events they have read so far.

"Genre Genius" goals for the 3rd reporting period.

Revising Tall Tales; Response to Reading

Social Studies/Science:

SS: The Gold Rush: Environmental Impact
Science: Life Science unit begins

Visual Arts:

Creating captivating book covers for the student authored book project.

 Please make sure your child is at school and in line by the 8:06 bell. We try to start the school day at 8:11 promptly. Thank you for your help!

Homework:
Please check your child's Homework Log nightly and sign or initial after the work has been completed. Remind your child that completed homework and the HW log are due in class daily.
