Classroom News for January 23rd

Dear MWE Families,
Thank you all for your support over the last 6 days. I can't tell you how much the food, coffee, notes, hand-warmers, and kind smiles meant over the last week. Thank you for opening your homes to all of us. I am so happy and relieved to be returning to my students, and am truly grateful to be part of this community. Thank you all!

News and Upcoming Events for the remainder of the week: 
 Forms due - PG permission slip for students to watch "Akeelah and the Bee" in preparation for upcoming grade 4 Spelling Bee.  We will see part 1 of this film Wednesday, Jan. 23 and part 2 on Thursday.

1/24 It's here! Wolves on Wheels Fundraiser 5 to 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25 cash or check only. No HW will be assigned this evening.

1/25 First Grade Buddies; Assembly with Santa Cecilia Orchestra. Students will be receiving free passes to the Orchestra's upcoming February concert.

1/28 NEW DATE! Greek and Latin Affix Quiz . Students will need to match each prefix with its meaning.

2/7 Field Trip to JPL. All chaperone spots have been filled.

* I am working with Leonis Adobe Museum to try to find a new date for us. I will keep you posted.

What's Going On This Week In Class:

Math: 

Long division on the place value chart

Reading:

We will begin reading Christopher Paul Curtis's Newbery Award Winning novel, Bud, Not Buddy. This week we will build background on the Great Depression and Segregation in the 1920s and read Chapters 1-4. Skills: Story Elements, Summarizing, Inferring, Writing to Explain.



Spelling & Vocabulary:

Keep working on memorizing the meanings of prefix list.

We will begin having mock spelling bees in the classroom. 

Arts:

Color: Using tints and shades to create VALUE.
