Classroom News for the Week of January 28th

Thank you, Everyone, for coming to Wolves on Wheels! We had such a fun night and raised $700 for each of the 4 upper grade classrooms. In our class, this money will be used to buy core literature and art supplies for your child to use this school year. Your donations will have a lasting impact as future students benefit from these materials as well. Thank you for paying it forward!

2/1  The students did a fantastic job on their mission projects! They followed project criteria well and wrote informative and insightful reports. Please feel free to come by the hallway outside rooms 11 and 12 to see their work. Projects will be sent home on Friday.

2/1 Grade 4 Spelling Bee. Participation is optional, and all students are strongly urged to give it a try.  Audience will be made up of 4th grade students only.

2/7 Field Trip to JPL. All chaperone spots have been filled. Thank you!

What's Going On This Week In Class:

Math: 

Long Division - This week we will continue to learn and practice the standard algorithm for long division. Learning this takes time. You can help your child by reviewing each night's math homework and by having your child tell you aloud what s/he is doing and why.

Reading:

Chapters 5-9 of  Bud, Not Buddy.  Mini-lessons/Skills: Identifying Figurative Language, Writing to Explain, and finding themes in literature. Your child will also see a portion of the PBS documentary, Riding the Rails.

Writing:

Writing Personal and Persuasive Essays: Practicing the 5 paragraph essay structure.

Health:

Consumers and Advertising: Looking critically at ads. 
Students: You will need a print ad for Wednesday's HW. You can get an ad from a magazine, newspaper, or print one from online.

Social Studies/Science -

Social Studies - Rancho Era
Science - Energy Transfer; Introduction to new PBL project

Please make sure your child is at school and in line by the 8:06 bell. We try to start the school day at 8:11 promptly. Thank you for your help!

Homework:

Please check your child's Homework Log nightly and sign or initial after the work has been completed. Remind your child that completed homework and the HW log are due in class daily.

Birthday Celebrations: If you would like to send treats to celebrate your child's birthday, please email me a day or 2 in advance so that I can make time in our schedule for it. Treats must be something small and easy to pass out. Donuts, cookies, muffins, and mini cupcakes all work great. We currently have 30 students in our class. Your child will distribute them at the end of the day as his/her classmates are leaving the room.

Donations: If you would like to make a donation to our class (this allows me to turn in receipts for purchases I have made for the students), you can write a check to "Mt. Washington El." In the subject line write, "Donation to Room 12". Any amount is appreciated! Thank you!
