Classroom News for the Week of March 16th

News and Upcoming Events:

Dear Families,

School is closed until at least March 30th. I will be updating the blog each week and checking email regularly. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns: slc5001@lausd.net.

The students have been bringing up coronavirus in morning meeting for the past two weeks. For the most part, they seemed not overly anxious and had factual information.  Please talk with your child regularly about what's going on. Explain to them the facts and statistics they may be hearing. A few students were having difficulty understanding the numbers - one student thought 2/3 of people who get coronavirus, die. Remember children this age will often "fill in" missing information themselves, so it's important to speak with them regularly about facts and offer actionable items, such as regular hand-washing.

Packets for the break were sent home on Friday. As much as possible, have your child follow the work as laid out on the calendar. They will learn and retain more by working each day rather than rushing to complete work at the beginning or end of the closure.

If you are having any difficulties, please reach out to me via email and I will assist you as best I can.

Take care everyone. I hope to see the students soon!

Send me your fairy tale on Friday, March 20th  slc5001@lausd.net

Reading - By The Great Horn Spoon (BGHS):
This historical fiction adventure takes place at the beginning of California's Gold Rush. These initial chapters introduce you to our two protagonists. Find out who is the antagonist.

Bonus: Use a map of the world to track Jack and Praiseworthy's journey to California.
Fill in country names, oceans, and port cities as you go.
Print this one:
https://www.waterproofpaper.com/printable-maps/world/map-of-the-world.pdf
or draw a map of your own.

Read 2 chapters each day and complete the comprehension questions using complete sentences. You may write your answers on another sheet of paper as the worksheet does not provide much space.

Parents: This is a great book to read and discuss together if you're able.

Accelerated Reader: Unfortunately, our license for AR is school-site only. Students will not have access to online quizzes at home. I will update you if this changes.

Grammar, Spelling, and Vocabulary:
Complete 2 pages a day from the workbook you received. Work neatly. No one will be mad if you do more :).

JPL 4/13
Field Trip to JPL. We are still optimistic that this will happen. Make sure to get your trip slip filled out and return it to school when we reopen.

PE:
Class: Exercise every day: push-ups, sit-ups, dance, hike, show your families your jump rope routine! Make a new routine, create a new trick, or practice an advanced skill. Here's some inspiration for you (check out the freestyle section!):

I look forward to hearing how you are keeping active and fit!

And:
1. Remember to read each day self-selected material.
2. Make art! Draw, paint, build. You can still access your Maker' Empire account.

Here's a nice tutorial from art teacher Patty Fernandez
on drawing a clipper ship ( the type of craft featured in BGHS):
