Classroom News for the Week of April 13th

Updates:

Dear Students and Families,

First, I hope all of you and your loved ones are healthy. Many people are saying it, but it's worth repeating: prioritizing the physical, mental, and emotional health of one another is crucial right now. I understand that every family situation is different and everyone is doing their best coping with this unprecedented reality. If you run into tech problems, scheduling problems, or other issues, please email me and we will work it out.

Below is the outline of the distance learning plan we'll be using for the upcoming weeks and possibly until the end of the school year. Superintendent Buetner is expected to make an announcement on Monday, April 13th regarding the remainder of the year. In the meantime we move forward with distance learning. Skieslearn and Zoom will be our two main platforms. LAUSD has advised us that 4th graders should spend 3 hours per day on screens. Ideally, your child would work from 8:30 to 12 with a 30 minute break.

While I am not providing a strict schedule, afternoons can be spent exercising, reading self-select material, taking AR tests, assisting with tasks at home, socializing with friends on the phone, Skype, Zoom etc, and working on assigned enrichment projects.

Please read through the information below. As always, feel free to contact me via email. Thank you!
Ms. Convey

Distance Learning Outline:

1. Students should check their email each day for any communications from me.They will always receive an email on Monday with their weekly Zoom time and instructions.

2. Students should log in to skieslearn.com each morning. Think of this as a "homeroom" that students should check in to and find the day's work. I will also be on Skies (see #4 below). After you've logged into Skies, navigate:
My Class
Week of _____ (Choose current week. You will see 4 tabs:)
  • ELA
  • Enrichment
  • Math
  • Science or Social Studies (these will alternate each week).
Click on each tab to see that day's work. (Students will have a math, ELA, Enrichment, and Social Studies or Science assignment each day.)

3. Students complete and submit work each day and receive scoring and feedback from me. They can check back in the afternoon or the following morning for my feedback. Students may resubmit work the following day for re-scoring if necessary. Students will receive automatic feedback on Khan.

4. I will be on Skies every morning. There is a chat type and voice feature (bottom right) where I can assist students.

5. I will continue to post a weekly blog. This will be a good place to check updates, overall news for the week, and log in information.

Ongoing Projects:

BGHS Book Report
Please email a photo of your book report project or submit it as a google doc once you've finished.

Fairy Tales
Work on fairy tale illustrations. Send me a photo of your finished book when you're done. Work toward a May 1 deadline. Illustrations:

* Less tech option: Print your story. Use plain white paper to draw and color your illustrations. Use markers, crayon, colored pencil, water color - your choice! Insert these pages in between your typed story.

* More tech option: Draw and illustrate your pictures on paper, take photos of your illustrations, use Insert ↠ Image to upload them into your document.

Your finished fairy tale should have:

  • A cover (Title and author, illustration)
  • A typed story
  • At least 3 illustrations
Paper Work Packets from Weeks 1-3
Please hold on to this work. If we return prior to the end of the year, I will collect it at this time.
